Questioning the Bible

Sometimes the most important activities we do in life are also the hardest things to do. For instance, exercise and eating healthy are essential to our lives and yet a challenge to maintain regularly. However, out of all the things we do in our lives, the necessary activity is our Bible intake.

Just like eating healthy and exercising, we know that reading the Bible is vital in our Christian life. However, understanding and applying the Bible in our lives can be tricky. One of the best ways I have learned to understand and apply the Bible is by asking questions.

Here are three questions I ask to help me when I read the Bible. Note that sometimes you will read passages that answer all three questions and sometimes only answer certain ones.

Question 1: What does this passage teach me about God?

Question 2: What does this passage teach me about me/others?

Question 3: What does this passage call me to do? Is there something to remember, an action to take, a sin to repent, or a promise to believe?

After reading the passage, I will answer all three questions by writing out phrases or short sentences. Then I reflect on what I have found and spend time in prayer. Once you practice this method, you will discover the great benefits of regularly reading the Bible.
