Invest Where it Matters the Most

(Matthew 6:19-34)

The distance between your mind and your heart is only 12 to 18 inches, but it can take a lifetime to travel. Most of us don't struggle to understand Matthew 6. We struggle to trust it.

We live in a culture that tells us more money will calm our fears and more comfort will secure our future. Jesus says the opposite: peace isn't found in storing up more, it's found in trusting God.

Invest in what lasts. Jesus opens this passage with a command, not a suggestion. You are constantly making investments. The question is where. The Bible doesn't condemn wealth — the problem comes when possessions take the place of God. There is only one investment with an eternal return: living for the Kingdom of God.

Run a diagnostic on your heart. Jesus says your heart follows your treasure. So here are three honest questions: Are you exhausted from chasing financial security? Do you live in fear of your finances, not just concern, but fear that has shut down generosity? Are you so anxious about tomorrow that worry is pulling you away from God? As Sinclair Ferguson noted, we were made to have a master. Money and God cannot share the throne.

Trust God enough to live generously. God cares for the birds and clothes the grass, He will care for you. The visible expression of that trust is generosity. In Mark 12, Jesus doesn't evaluate the widow's two coins by their dollar amount but by her sacrifice and faith. Her giving said, I trust you, God, to provide. Here's a truth I've learned personally: you will never miss what you give away for Kingdom work.

That's how the Kingdom works: God takes ordinary obedience and creates eternal impact.

"Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think… to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever." — Ephesians 3:20-21

Kingdom investments today impact future generations. What will yours be?
