Do Not Be a Square! Go See the Jesus Revoultion Movie.
The Jesus Revolution movie, based on the true story of the early part of the Jesus Movement Revival, is out in theaters, and I believe it is the one movie you NEED to see this year! The movie tells the story about how a revival started among the hippies in the late 1960s and spread across many parts of the nation. I have seen the movie twice, and I loved it both times. Here are some reasons you need to see this film.
Reason 1: The Jesus Movement reminds us that outcasts have a place in the Kingdom of God; during the 1960s-1970s, people did not know what to do with those who identified as hippies. These were seen as the outcast of society. They did not fit into the social norms of the day and certainly not in many churches. However, this is the group of people that God started a revival that spread in many parts of the United States.
Reason 2: The movie shows the desperation of those who do not know Christ as they search for answers. The Hippie Movement was about searching for truth. Sadly, many turned to drugs to find the truth. The film does a great job highlighting that these people wanted to have conversations, uncover the truth, and know what it meant to be loved and accepted. Desperate people do desperate things!
Reason 3: The movie shows what happens when Christians are open to what God wants to do in our churches. The sad part about the Jesus Movement is the amount of Christians and churches who missed the revival because they would not allow “those hippies” into their churches. The movie does a great job of reminding viewers that the church belongs to God and that we should be ready and open to what God wants to do with us.
Reason 4: The Jesus Revolution film is about hope! Desperate people find hope in Jesus, they find truth in Jesus, and they see life in Jesus. With news reports of revivals breaking out on college campuses throughout the south and other parts of our country, I am excited and praying for God to send another revival in the lives of college students.
Reason 5: The movie is a great reminder that God uses broken and flawed people to spread the gospel. The movie centers on Chuck, Greg, and Lonnie as the leaders of the Jesus Movement. All three men are flawed and the movie exposes their flaws. The way these are shown is an incredible reminder that God uses broken people to share a complete and perfect message of hope!
I do not agree with everything theologically in the film (sorry my charismatic friends), but I love how the movement stayed gospel centered and focused on getting the good news of Jesus out to as many people as possible.
This is a powerful movie which shows what happens when Christians are open to the work of God in their lives and make sacrifices to spread the gospel. May God send another Jesus Movement type revival in our lifetime!
